Top 10 Favorite Films Of 2013

This was one of the hardest years to rank. It was a weak year for franchise pictures – most notably the Star Trek sequel seemed to destroy any good will I had for it after the hughly enjoyable reboot. Into Darkness disappointingly seemed to break the greater Star Trek universe while pathetically recycling story and dialogue from better movies. Iron Man 3 was poor; Fast & Furious 6 wasnt as good as 5, though was still better than 1, 2, 4 and indeed 7; none of the sequels to Kick-Ass, Hunger Games, Hobbit, Thor or Die Hard managed to add anything to their franchises.

10. Star Trek Into Darkness

I hate what this movie did and represents. It’s an extremely poor sequel to the mostly excellent reboot. Yet. It’s Star Trek. It’s the characters that I love. It’s looks lovely. Of all the movies on the list I will revisit this more than most. However. It disappoints me that despite a successful reboot, and all new, unpredictable timeline that they went back to the well and tried to retell the Khan story (much, much less successfully than TWOK). This was a missed opportunity.

09. We’re The Millars

Genuinely funny – some laugh out loud moments.

08. Rush
07. Pain & Gain
06. Evil Dead
05. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa
04. Man Of Steel
03. Delivery Man
Vince Vaughn. You either love him or hate him. Whichever side you are on – I think you should watch this. There is some decent, genuine acting in here. It’s a funny, heart-felt story about family.

02. Lone Survivor

01. About Time
Richard Curtis inserts time travel into a rom-com. This ain’t no sci-fi movie – the time travel element is full of plot holes — best to just ignore the intricacies and roll with the rom-com side of the plot. Which is obviously the objective. Domhnall Gleeson takes the mantle from Hugh Grant as Curtis’ self-effacing lead — with an amazingly similar sounding voice over.  Bill Nighy and Tom Hollander steal every scene they are in. It’s lovely.
