Todd McFarlane

When I found my first local comic shop; the owner was a big fan of McFarlane’s work on Amazing Spider-Man and got me hooked – in fact my first two subscriptions were Amazing Spider-Man (with Erik Larsen pencilling) and Spider-Man (with Todd on writing and pencilling duties). I got into the X-Men a little later when Jim Lee launched the simply titled X-Men.

Anyway the cover for Spider-Man #1 is probably McFarlane’s most famous piece and he has revisited this pose for the Black-suited Spider-Man #13 and Spawn (need to look that up). The number-one shipped nearly two and a half million copies… which is amazing when you think twenty years later a book would be doing well to hit one hundred thousand.

Why do I bring Todd and Spider-Man up… well the below piece of art is for sale at auction here. It is pricey though – currently sitting at $195,000.

And as far as I can tell this is the only time McFarlane drew Colossus:

It is also up for auction and is currently sitting at the bargin bin price of $28,000

Here it is in color:

[Update: July 27, 2012] Spider-Man #1 went for $358,500.00 and Marvel Tales went for $56,762.50 but the surprise was Amazing Spider-Man #328 (which was the last ASM cover McFarlane did and the first McFarlane ASM I ever owned) which went for $657,250.00

Not quite sure why the ASM went for nearly twice that of the Spider-Man cover – personally I would rate the Spider-Man cover higher… it is frankly better drawn and more iconic.
